Inky Mushroom

This is one of those species that is widely distributed but only occasionally found but where it occurs there can be a lot of it. That is certainly true of the only place I found it so far, Kingston Lacey Gardens. It is found throughout the summer and autumn and usually in troops as in my photograph. It prefers open soil in woodland, esppecially calcareous soils.

It is apparently edible if you like your mushrooms sour, with a hint of metal filings and swimming in ink! i will pass if I may.
