The main attraction of Upton Country Park is that it provides access to the saltmarsh on the western shore of Holes Bay (via the footpath to Poole) which is a great place for wintering wildfowl and waders although they can be a way off and a telescope is probably best. In winter expect enormous numbers of teal and wigeon as well as abundant numbers of gulls and waders. Good site for little egret too, often around 20 or so gathered there at high tide.
The country park itself is really the grounds of Upton House, now a countryside heritage centre. It is a mixture of formal gardens, farmland and woodland The beech woodland is especially good for fungi in the autumn.
Free parking is a bonus but expect lots of dog walkers and noise from the main road. The tea rooms are quite resonable.
