Lichen

Lichen
We are surrounded by lichens of one sort or another. Trees and shrubs have lichen on their trunks and branches and our walls, roofs, even grave stones, are often covered in them. They are difficult to identify unless you have a keen eye and an extensive knowledge as they bring with them a technical language that has been developed to describe their unique structure and composition. Lichen are not plants, they are a combination of a fungus and an algae living together as one, symbiosis. This series of notes is a layman's view of some of the more common species.
